There are property tax exemptions available in Maine that may reduce one's overall tax bill. These exemptions include those for blind individuals, veterans, and a homestead exemption.

The Homestead Exemption allows for a tax reduction of no more than $25,000, which is applied toward the assessed property value. In order to qualify for the homestead exemption, the applicant must be a permanent Maine resident and have owned a their residence for the 12 months prior to April 1.

A Veteran Exemption of up to $6,000 is available for war veterans 62 years or older; and to veterans who are 100% disabled.

Legally blind individuals are eligible to receive $4,000 under Maine's Blind Exemption.

These exemptions require an application to be submitted on or before April 1.
