For the most part, the larger a municipality's population, the bigger the statistical sample size, which gives more accurate results and a lower margin of error.

For instance, Yonkers, one the most populated cities in New York State, has a margin of error of $29 for the estimated rental cost of $1,659. One of the sparsest populated villages, Clayville, has a margin of error of $314 on an rent estimate of $1,289.

By sorting the table of rental costs by the Margin of Error column, you can see the smallest error margins are generally found for the largest cities in New York, like Bufalo, New York City, Syracuse, and Rochester.

Conversely, the error margins for communities with smaller populations tend to be greater than those of cities. Upstate New York rent prices are considerably cheaper than those in NYC.

Data is based upon The U.S. Census Bureau's 2019-2023 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.
